Diana Hayes was born in Toronto in 1955 and has lived on the east and west coasts of Canada. She studied at the University of British Columbia and Victoria, receiving a B.A. and M.F.A. in Creative Writing. She was Poetry Editor for Prism international while at U.B.C. from ’80 – ’82. Her poetry, articles and fiction have appeared in various journals include CVII, Descant, Event, FreeFall Magazine, From An Island, Island,The Malahat Review, Poetry Canada Review, Sea and Cedar Magazine, and her poetry has been broadcast on the CBC. Her published books include Two of Swords (co-editor), Moving Inland, The Classical Torso In 1980, The Choreography of Desire, Coming Home (anthology), This Is The Moon’s Work, Labyrinth of Green, Gold in the Shadow: Twenty-two Ghazals and a Cento for Phyllis Webb, Language of Light, and Sapphire and the Hollow Bone. Her play Islomania: Saga of the Settlers was produced by Salt of the Earth Productions and for the Salt Spring Festival of the Arts. For over two decades, Diana Hayes has expanded her poetic vision into the realm of photographic dreamscapes and narratives. Her photographs have been shown through the Vancouver Association of Photographic Arts and the Exposure Gallery, and in the annual Photosynthesis Shows at ArtSpring. A selection of her photographs was chosen for the Sooke Fine Arts Show and for the Parallel Art Show on Salt Spring Island. In 2019 she launched Raven Chapbooks and publishes small edition poetry chapbooks by B.C. poets. Salt Spring Island has been home since 1981.
