Jamella Hagen’s first collection of poetry, Kerosene, was published by Nightwood Editions in 2011. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from UBC, has worked as an executive editor of PRISM international, has been a guest editor for the Northern Review, and has coordinated the Whitehorse Poetry Festival. She currently works as an instructor of English and Creative Writing at Yukon University, and is an affiliate poetry editor with the Alaska Quarterly Review. Her work has won The Fiddlehead’s Ralph Gustafson Poetry Prize, has been shortlisted for a CBC Literary Award, and has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry. In Canada, her work has appeared in journals and anthologies including The Malahat Review, Grain, Unfurled: Collected Poetry from Northern BC Women and Refugium: Poems for the Pacific. In the US, her poems have appeared in Calyx, Ice Floe, The Alaska Quarterly Review, and Ploughshares. She lives with her eight-year-old son, Rowan, on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council in Whitehorse, Yukon.
