Elaine Hayes studied creative writing at the University of Calgary (2007; B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing) and the Humber School for Writers.
Her short stories and essays have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, including (M)othering: an anthology; Carte Blanche; Grain Magazine; Writing Menopause; Alberta Views; and Somebody’s Child: Stories about Adoption.
She is the author of White Margarine: a novel, which is inspired by her experiences as the biological child of fostering parents. The novel highlights the vulnerabilities of both the hosting family and the young children they seek to protect.
She is currently compiling a collection of short stories and is also completing her second novel, All those Sample Pieces. All Those Sample Pieces examines the complex relationship between an aging retailer and her employee daughter, and it chronicles their struggles to reconcile familial obligations with the contemporary pressures of fast fashion.
