Domenico Capilongo lives in Toronto and teaches high school creative writing. His award winning short stories and poems have appeared in several national and international literary magazines. His first book of poetry, I thought elvis was Italian, was short-listed for the 2010 F.G. Bressani Literary Prize. His book of jazz-inspired poetry, hold the note, was long-listed for the 2011 ReLit Award.His poetry collection, send, explores the way we communicate. His first book of short fiction, Subtitles, was short-listed for the 2012 ReLit Award. His latest book of poems, 1972, is about the words entered in the dictionary the year he was born.
His presentations topics range from the history and function of poetry, writing in general and how to read and analyze poems for a deeper understanding. He makes use of multimedia and slides decks in order to deliver engaging presentations. He is an experienced high school teacher and Teacher-Librarian who is comfortable presenting to audiences.
His workshops range from leading relaxed and flexible discussions on poetry and writing to teaching very structured writing drills and lessons. He likes to read his work and the work of other writers and discussing where writing comes from, how a writer develops their own voice, and prepares their work for publication. He enjoys sharing and teaching the art of writing.
His high school workshops are engaging and flexible about poetry and writing and can include interactive writing drills to generate student writing.
