Biography

CLAIRE HOLDEN ROTHMAN is a Montreal writer and translator, whose third novel, Lear’s Shadow (2018) won the 2019 Vine Award for Jewish Canadian Fiction and was short-listed for the 2020 Jacob Isaac Segal Award for Best Quebec Book on a Jewish Theme. Her second novel, My October (2014), was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Award and nominated for a Scotiabank Giller prize. Her first novel, The Heart Specialist (2009), was likewise nominated for the Giller. Claire’s translation of David Bouchet’s Sun of a Distant Land / Soleil (2017) was shortlisted for the QWF Cole Foundation Translation Prize. Her translation of The Influence of a Book / L’influence d’un livre by Philippe-Ignace-François Aubert de Gaspé (1837), Quebec’s first homegrown novel, won the John Glassco Translation Prize.

Fiction workshops (online and in person) on different elements of craft (e.g., significant detail, character, conflict, etc.). We talk theory briefly and then I read some examples from published fiction. After a short body break, we do on-the-spot timed writings. We end with shared, voluntary readings of what we've written.
