The UBC School of Creative Writing seeks an exceptional teacher of Writing for Children and Young Adults to fill a Lecturer position commencing as early as July 1, 2021.

The teaching load for this position is 24 credits (eight 3-credit courses) per year, ranging from large open-enrolment lecture courses to upper-level workshops. The successful candidate will also contribute to the School of Creative Writing in an administrative capacity, including participating in program committees related to their area of expertise, and serving on faculty committees to evaluate prospective BFA and MFA students. In cases where an extraordinary level of additional administrative or service responsibilities is assigned, a 3-credit teaching reduction may be granted.

This is a full-time position for a term of up to three years, which entails a probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e. non tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience. A record of successful teaching in online or blended formats is desirable.

  • An MFA in Creative Writing, but in exceptional circumstances, the equivalent combination of education and writing and publishing experience will be considered.

  • Related professional publishing experience and expertise in writing for children and young adults is required. Experience writing picture books and/or in a second genre is an asset.

  • To ensure full consideration, applicants should submit their applications here, https://crwr.air.arts.ubc.ca/job-opportunities/lecturer-in-writing-for-children-and-young-adults, and be prepared to upload the following in the order listed:

    • a letter of application;

    • curriculum vitae that includes the names and contacts of three referees;

    • statement of teaching philosophy;

    • a one-page statement about your experience working with a diverse student body and your contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion; and

    • evidence of teaching effectiveness (course outlines, student evaluations).

Applications and all supporting materials should be received by May 16, 2021. Review of applications will begin soon after this date and will continue until the position is filled.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are particularly interested in applicants from underrepresented and/or racialized communities. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Given the uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, applicants must be prepared to conduct interviews remotely if circumstances require. A successful applicant may be asked to consider an offer containing a deadline without having been able to make an in-person visit to campus if travel and other restrictions are still in place.
