Taiaiake was born at Tiohtiake (Montreal) in 1964 and raised on the Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory. He was educated by Jesuits, served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantryman, and later earned degrees in history and political science at Concordia University and Cornell University. His writings include books, newspaper columns, and essays, and he has been published in a wide variety of print and online journals and magazines.
