Meaghan Hackinen is a writer and cyclist whose two-wheeled adventures have taken her from Haida Gwaii to Mexico’s high plateaus, across Canada and the United States, and, most recently, from North Cape to Tarifa along some of Europe’s highest paved roads. Her writing explores relationships, experiences on the road, and encounters with wild places. Her creative non-fiction, poetry, and prose can be found in literary journals and cycling magazines. Her debut travel memoir, South Away: The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels (NeWest Press, 2019) was shortlisted for the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize and an Alberta Book Publishing Award; her follow up, Shifting Gears: Coast to Coat on the Trans Am Bike Race (NeWest Press, 2023) documents her entry into the underground and unregulated sport of self-supported endurance racing. Meaghan has an MFA in Writing from the University of Saskatchewan and currently resides on the traditional, ancestral, and unneeded territory of the Syilx/Okanagan People in Kelowna, BC.
