Published by Simon & Schuster Canada in January, 2015, Cathie Borrie's memoir, The Long Hello ~ Memory, My Mother, and Me, is written in spare prose, largely in the form of a dialogue. The Long Hello explores the emotional rewards and challenges that Cathie experienced in caring for her mother, who was living with Alzheimer’s disease for seven years. Between the two, a wondrously poetic dialogue develops, which Cathie further illuminates with childhood memories of her family, and her struggle to maintain a life outside her caregiving responsibilities. 
Excerpts from the manuscript were shortlisted in The CBC Literary Awards (as it then was), in 2005, 2006, and 2009. The book has been adapted for the stage by Cathie and playwright director, Jimmy Fagan Tait. 
Cathie trained as a nurse in Vancouver and holds a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She also graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in law, and has a Certificate in Creative Writing from the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University, where she studied in the non-fiction group with Betsy Warland. She lives in North Vancouver.
