Biography

Myrl is the author of three published books. Her first, The House With the Broken Two: A Birthmother Remembers (Anvil Press, 2011), won the 2010 First Book Competition sponsored by The Writers’ Studio at Simon Fraser University and the 2011 Canadian Authors Association Exporting Alberta Award. Ten years after its release, The House With the Broken Two still has an active readership, many of whom send Myrl messages of appreciation for the book and sharing their own adoption stories.  Myrl's second book, A Year of Days (U of Alberta Press 2015) won an IPPY (Independent Publisher Book Award) bronze medal for 2016 and was a Foreword Review 2016 INDIEFAB finalist in the Essays category. Myrl's third book, The Left-Handed Dinner Party and Other Stories, is a collection of connected short (and short-ish) fiction about absence, family secrets, and ghosts. In 1995, Myrl won a National Screen Institute Drama Prize for her short screenplay, Willpower. Myrl writes long and short-form fiction, personal essays and creative nonfiction, screenplays, and poetry. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Alberta, where she taught English and writing for eight years. Myrl also conducts workshops, mentors emerging writers, and offers manuscript evaluation services. She lives in Kelowna, BC. For more information, visit Myrl's website at www.myrlcoulter.com
