MY BEST FRIEND IS EXTINCT PRESENTATION (GRADES 4 & UP )
My middle grade novel is about ten-year-old Henry Springs who discovers a strange creature that is seriously injured. While he nurses him back to health he discovers the creature is not the only unusual beast lurking in the neighbourhood. This is a story about friendship, bullying, finding your true self, and discovering animals believed to be extinct. Using a Powerpoint presentation, I describe where my ideas originated, and how pre-historic creatures like the short-faced bear and sabre-tooth tiger roamed our lands a mere 10,000 years ago. I describe my creative writing methods, how the book evolved, and the editing process through multiple drafts with my writers group, editor and illustrator. The presentation includes a reading, activities, a question and answer period and a book signing. The duration is approximately 50-60 minutes.
WORLDBUILDING CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP (ALL AGES )
Join me for a 60 minute writing workshop on how to build an invented world. I draw on examples from my middle-grade novel My Best Friend is Extinct, featuring pre-historic creatures like the short-faced bear and sabre-tooth tiger that roamed our lands a mere 10,000 years ago. I talk about where ideas come from, how to world-build, and discuss some of the rules of world-building. Bring a pen and paper or a keyboard and get ready to brainstorm fantastical creatures, one big fib, and a little bit of weirdness in a short writing exercise during the workshop. The duration is between 60 - 75 minutes.
