The Writers' Union of Canada (TWUC) is saddened by the news of author Farley Mowat's passing, yesterday, at the age of 92. Mowat's writing career spanned five decades, and he was both inspiration and mentor to several generations of authors who followed on his success. Among a lifetime of literary accomplishments, Mowat was also a founding member of The Writers' Union of Canada, and was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Union in 2007.

"Farley was present at our founding meeting at Ottawa's Lord Elgin hotel in the fall of 1973," said Dorris Heffron, TWUC Chair and longtime acquaintance of Mowat. "And of course his profile, humour, spirit, and energy were large factors in the creation and early effectiveness of our organization. He said he would stand on his head in a public square, wearing his kilt, if necessary to promote Canadian Literature. Fortunately, or not, he never found that necessary. Dear Fabulous Farley. He is truly unforgettable."

With over 40 books to his name, many of which are products of his passion for the Canadian north and deep respect for its indigenous peoples, Mowat helped educate Canada about itself.

"I've been reading Mowat's books to my children since before they could pick up a book themselves" added TWUC Executive Director, John Degen. "His early environmentalism and love of the land has been defining for much Canadian writing."

"We've been planning a celebration of TWUC founder Alice Munro's Nobel win for our upcoming conference in St. John's" noted Heffron, "and now, of course, we'll also be toasting the long and wonderful life of Farley Mowat."

Mowat is survived by writer Claire Mowat and two children, David and Sandy.
